The Transmusicales festival began in Rennes in 1979, and rapidly became a popular event due to its radically innovative musical programme. It was the first to feature performers who are now inescapable household names such as Etienne Daho, Stephan Eicher, La Mano Negra, Rachid Taha, Nirvana, Björk, Portishead, Ben Harper, Beck, Noir Désir, Lenny Kravitz, Yann Tiersen, Dyonisos, Gotan Project, etc.
As of 1981, the Transmusicales also threw the festival wide open to groups from other European countries. At the same time, countries such as Norway and China sought to create an equally tantalizing event, thereby thrusting young European artists into the limelight.
For its 30th anniversary, the Transmusicales will particularly showcase groups from all over Europe. The festival was also listed as a “Green'n Clean” event by the Yourope European festivals association, which awards this label to organisations which are respectful of the environment.
A series of films and exhibitions will feature newcomers to the current European scene.
